Before I went to this show, I had no idea who Black Rebel Motorcycle Club was. I ended up at this show because I was/am a huge Dandy Warhols fan and they weren’t playing a date in my hometown, Minneapolis, on this tour.
I had the opportunity to chat with Courtney Taylor of the Dandy Warhols before they went on stage and he asked me if I had ever heard of BRMC before. When I said I had not, he began telling me how amazing they were. I really didn’t believe him. I usually don’t give opening bands much chance (which is silly, but true), but I figured what the hell? Let’s see if Mr. Taylor is right.
After watching the set, my friend and I shared our thoughts and determined that BRMC was hands down, the best opening band we’d ever seen. The music was like nothing we had heard before and the bassist (who I later learned was named Robert) was incredibly engaging. He was producing sounds from the instrument that I didn’t know could be made. They were an amazing band.
Since my friend worked for a college radio station, she decided to corner Robert and ask him how she could get a promo or something to play on the radio station. He told her that they did not have an album or anything at this point so there was nothing he could offer her. Instead, he told her to sign up to the mailing list.
Being as impressed as we were, we went home and immediately looked the band up on Napster (shhh!). I found about five songs from the promo album, which I listened to incessantly until the album was finally released in spring of 2001.
I became a fan that night.

My girlfriend and I drove up from Indiana to see the Dandy's, who were my favorite band at the time. I remember talking to Courtney, Brent and Pete briefly and how the loved this "new" band that was playing with them and how they thought they were gonna be the next big thing. I remember BRMC actually put on a much better set than the Dandy's and we've loved them ever since. We also got engaged that night after the show and have been married for five years now.
