Well, I guess I won't be saying anything that hasn't already been said about a BRMC show in regards to the absolute amazing-ness of them, but I hope I can depict just a little bit of the magic that does occur at their gigs in this review for you all.
I won't go into detail about each song, but they played a blinding set that flowed very well. They came straight out with 'Berlin' and that set the precedent for the rest of the show. I think the crowd was quite a good one too, from what I could gather where I was standing, it was a pretty responsive one. When Peter was playing 'Devil's Waitin'' in the middle, at that point he was on his own up there. When it got to the 'ooooh, oh oh ooooh' part of the song, you could hear the whole crowd singing along with him - he wasn't alone at all. I think he was touched, because I saw him smile. That was a really beautiful moment. :)
Another sweet moment, was when they played 'Promise', but there was no trombone. Peter played the trombone bit with his guitar! He also apologised for not having his trombone, but I don't think anyone in the audience minded.
What I was not expecting at all was the new Bob Dylan song that Robert played after Peter played 'Fault Line' and 'Devil's Waitin''. Robert said to us that he usually plays 'Lonesome Death of Hattie Carroll', but he had been thinking about retiring that one. When he was telling us this, someone in the crowd suggested he play 'Hotel California', and that gave him a good laugh! It was so funny to see his reaction, everyone had the giggles! Not only did Robert play this song so soulfully, but was was sitting on a speaker right in front of me! He was literally 2 inches away from where I was! I was in complete shock to be so close to somebody I look up to so much. I still can't believe it happened actually! I will NEVER forget that moment, ever! Words don't do it justice, but I am sure you can understand how I would feel. :)
For the encore, they played 5 songs. Which was awesome. They threw in 'Six Barrel Shotgun' at the suggestion of someone in the crowd who had yelled it out. Was so unreal to see that incredible break down they play in the middle where Nick just keeps playing the drums, he just kept going and going! Peter even got his bow back out that he uses to play at the beginning of 'All You Do Is Talk'. It was wonderful!
I had high hopes for this gig, and the boys lived up to all my expectations and more. Even with Robert still being a little crook, you could never tell from the way that he played. They all played so beautifully. :)
Right from the beginning, I knew we were in for a momentous occasion (seeing Nick come out to play in thongs [flip flops] - awesome!). There had been something in the air beforehand hinting that something very special was gonna go down. I dunno what it was, and I don't know how to explain it, but it was there! ;)
Thankyou Peter, Nick and Robert for such an amazing night. You have played so many shows over the last year or so, but you gave us your heart and souls last night and for that I will always be grateful. It was an honour to be there with you. I hope you enjoyed your time in Sydney as much as we loved having you here. :)
Also, many thanks to Nappi, PsychedelicGirl, Sunchild and Mat555 for the great company last night too. It was a pleasure meeting you and I am sure it will not be the last! And also, thanks Mr Been for having a chat with us outside after the gig. It was a pleasure being in your company also. You are lovely. :)
The Black Ryder were great too! Look forward to hearing and seeing more of them in the future! ;)
